Meet Juliana in San Diego
"It's an experience that stays with you for life and opens doors you didn’t even know existed."
Why did you choose to go abroad?
After more than 12 years of working in Germany, I felt a strong desire to try something completely new. I wanted a fresh perspective, to step out of my comfort zone, and challenge myself both personally and professionally. What was missing in my career was international work experience, which I see as an important step for my future. The US especially attracted me because of its international business environment, innovative mindset, and the opportunity to gain real-world work experience abroad. On a personal level, I had always dreamed of living by the beach and combining that with professional growth felt like the perfect next chapter.
How does the US culture differ from your culture and what has impressed you most so far?
US culture feels more open, optimistic, and opportunity-driven compared to what I was used to in Germany. People are very friendly, supportive, and not afraig to talk about big goals and dreams. What impressed me most is the positive and encouraging mindset. Even strangers motivate you or start conversations easily.
Could you take us for a day? What are your routines?
A typical day starts early in San Diego. I often FaceTime my family in the morning, as it's usually the only time we can connect due to the nine-hour time difference. After that, I either attend a workout class or grab a matcha and go roller skating along the boardwalk. Then I head to work, where I support different construction projects and administrative tasks while learning how a US company operates. After work I usually connect with my friends, go to the beach or watch the sunset.
How has this experience abroad helped you to grow personally?
This experience has helped me grow into a stronger, more independent and more self-aware person. Moving to the US on my own turned out to be a powerful learning experience. Even though I had travelled alone before, this journey felt special because it gave me the chance to truly build a life from scratch. Finding a home, buying a car, making new connections, and creating a new daily routine allowed me to develop resilience and confidence step by step.

Why would you recommend others to do a program abroad?
Because it changes you in the best way. You don't just learn about another country - you learn about yourself. It improves your language skills, your confidence and understanding of different cultures. You become more open-minded, flexible and brave. It's an experience that stays with you for life and opens doors you didn't even know existed.
If you could express your experience in three words, what would these be?
Challenging - Growing - Exploring.
