5 simple and relaxing day trips from Lisbon

12 juli 2016

Lisbon is Portugal’s Capital and largest city built on seven hills. It is situated on the Atlantic Coast at the mouth of the Tagus River. It is also known to be the westernmost capital of a mainland country in Europe. Concerning climate, Lisbon has mild winters and very hot Mediterranean summers with a year round average temperature of about 21 degrees.

Here are some of the best and most beautiful day trips from Lisbon:

  • Sintra

Situated about 30 kilometers northwest of Lisbon’s city center, Sintra is an old town with a beautiful ancient castle recognized as UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape. It is easily accessible from Lisbon by train and it is a 40 min journey. There are many Palaces and castles to see in Sintra, including:

  • 14th-centurypalace “Palácio Nacional de Sintra”
  • 8th century Moorish Castle above the old town called “Castelo dos Mouros”

  • Boca do inferno

Boca do inferno (Portuguese for “Hell’s Mouth”) is about 30 kilometers west of Lisbon (west of Cascais town). It is a coast of cliffs where a chasm is carved out of them. There are passageways where you can climb down the cliff and see the opening of “Hell’s Mouth” and the unique rock formation on both sides. You can also get many viewing points where you can see the sea and it’s beautiful horizon.

  • Praia do Guincho

Praia do Guicho is known as one of the most fabulous beaches in the region. It is a world-class destination for windsurfing, surfing and kite surfing. This beach gets quite a bit of wind, which is why the water activities are so popular. Though with the wind, there are often high waves and large waves with currents changing rather quickly. This is way it isn’t recommended to go swimming in these waters - but the beach is a very beautiful one and great for sunbathing!

  • Cabo da Roca

Cabo da Roca is a cape further along the coast from Guincho. It is the most western point of Portugal and Continental Europe. There is a lighthouse that is not open to visitors- but it is a nice place to see. You can have a peaceful walk along the coast and look at the beautiful horizon.

  • Azenhas do Mar

Azenhas do Mar is a bundle of small white cottages along the coast and  cliffs. What is amazing about this place is the natural rock pool, which is below the village at the base of the cliff. This place is quite calm and peaceful with a beautiful view of the coast. Not far is the beach resort of Praia das Maçãs, which can be reached by taking a vintage tram from Sintra.
